Health Concerns Human health effects include gastrointestinal complications, liver damage, kidney damage, neurological symptoms, and potentially even death. One study has linked Cyanobacteria toxins to Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, and Parkinson’s disease. Cyanobacteria is on the US EPA’s Contaminant Candidate List (CCL) for possible regulation. The Center for Disease Control as well as many states has issued warnings regarding water contaminated with Cyanobacteria.
